Nebel’s Rainbow is probably the only variety of plumeria that I can honestly say I will never grow again. Ever. I had several trees that I sold to various buyers, and each buyer heard the same thing from me: “I hate this tree. Are you SURE you want to buy it? It doesn’t do anything but black tip and produce a million more branches which then black tip and produce more branches. It hasn’t done anything for me here. I’m selling it this cheap for a reason.”
I was able to control the black tip with a special lawn fungicide, but honestly, I don’t have time for trees that require special care. I don’t want to sell plants that require disclosures and give the new owners problems. With the decision to grow organically, my arsenal of fungicides changed and Nebel’s Rainbow was removed from our collection. I have heard that some growers do not have the black tip issues and that the variety blooms well for them, but I wasn’t that lucky!
